§ Need to know the Holy Spirit
The doctrine of the Godhead is revealed only in the Bible; no one can learn of Christ the Savior or the Holy Spirit from nature. Only those who will patiently study the Bible with desire to know teachings concerning Spirit will ever know the Holy Spirit in the Bible and the Godhead. The teachings of the Godhead lie at the very heart of revealed truth; this teaching is the center from which all other tenets radiate. The doctrine concerning the Godhead embodies truth which never has been discovered, and is indiscoverable by natural reason; we are department upon revealed truth for all that we may know about it. With all the searching that man has been able to do, he has not been able to find out anything of the Godhead save what has been revealed in the Bible.
It is important that we have correct views concerning the Bible teaching on the Godhead. If we entertain false conceptions and wrong views of the Godhead, we will not be able to understand the nature of the Holy Spirit and our entire system of faith will be imperiled. Many have been the attempted explanations of the Trinity or Godhead. Some have taught that the Godhead is a threefold manifestation of one person. This theory makes the Godhead one God. There is a sense in which the three but this unity does not destroy the three distinct personalities of the Godhead. Another false view is that there are three Gods; this theory ignores the unity of the Godhead. Both these views contradict the teachings of the Bible that God is three persons, yet one in essence and purpose. Jesus constantly referred to God as his Father and as a distinct person from himself. His .also promised to send the Comforter from the Father. (John IS: 26.) Jesus could not send the Holy Spirit as a third divine person, if the Godhead were only one person showing himself in three different ways. The Godhead has evidently revealed himself to men in the Bible as three persons, and not as three aspects of one person. With this view of the Godhead, we are now ready to proceed with the unfolding of our sublime theme, the Holy Spirit. We should here resolve to consider prayerfully every statement that God has revealed to us of the Holy Spirit and get a clearer view of the Holy Spirit and his ministry in the redemption of our race.
The fact that the Holy Spirit is revealed in the Bible as a member of the Godhead makes this an important subject. Anything connected with the Godhead is important, and the more vitally connected with the Godhead the more important. Only in the Bible may we find the names which have been given to the Holy Spirit 6y divine authority. His name is "The Spirit," and Jesus says, "God is a Spirit" or "God is Spirit." (John 4: 24.) All the members of the Godhead are of the same nature; hence, they partake of the nature of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit partakes of the nature of the other members of the Godhead. If we can learn the nature of the Godhead, we will then have gained information as to the nature of the Holy Spirit.
